Eating plant-based has been a trend for the last few years and we are now seeing its influence in pasta. Protecting our health and the planet is a top priority in addition to saving money. Going down the memory lane with nostalgic treats and using an ancient fruit as a natural way to sweeten food - here’s a look at the food trends to expect for 2023.
1. Avocado oil
Avocado oil has a neutral flavor and high smoke point which makes it a compatible ingredient in a variety of dishes. In addition, avocado oil has heart health benefits and it will become more mainstream in packaged products like mayonnaise and potato chips.
2. Pasta alternatives
The gluten-free pastas made from chickpeas, lentils, and rice are currently in many pantries. There’s also many recipes around featuring fresh noodles made with zucchini, squash, and other produce. There’s an influx of plant-based pasta alternatives on grocery shelves, with ingredients like spaghetti squash, hearts of palm and green bananas.
This ancient fruit is trending as an alternative natural sweetener in the form of pastes, syrups, sauces, and more. The high fibre content and concentrated energy make dates an ideal snack which can be easily consumed as is or in recipes like energy balls.
4. Nostalgic Treats
We will be going down memory lane with adapted versions of childhood favorites but more wellness-focused. Some examples are macaroni and cheese, pizza bites and prebiotic soda.
This sweet and tangy fruit is likely to be the ingredient of the year. You can find in many cuisines around the world like Mexican, Indian and Southeast Asian. It’s available in various forms - pods or paste and found in sweets, snacks and beverages.
6. Budget-Friendly foods
Consumers are on the lookout for money-saving strategies, such as buying in bulk, choosing cheaper house brands, cooking meals from scratch and limiting food waste. The rising cost of groceries are impacting family budgets which makes this reality a top food and beverage trend for 2023.
7. Canned fish
Canned fish is affordable, nutritious and delicious. Sardines, anchovies, mackerel and tuna are some of the most popular items on the market. Convenient and versatile, canned fish is a great option for almost any meal.
8. Steam ovens
Water is a better conductor than air which makes this method very appealing. Steam ovens are fast and efficient at cooking healthy meals and side dishes. This cooking method helps preserve food’s moisture, nutrients and flavor.
